What Is Montessori

Over 100 years ago, Dr. Maria Montessori developed her theory of education after observing young children and paying close attention to how they learned. Maria Montessori was ahead of her time. Born in Italy in 1870, she became the first female physician in Italy when she graduated from medical school in 1896.

Through her medical practice, she became interested in how children learn, and ultimately left medicine to become an educator. Her pioneering work created a blueprint for educating children, from the learning disabled to the gifted, and for helping children to become self-motivated, independent life-long learners.

In 1907, Dr. Maria Montessori, introduced a revolutionary approach towards the way children are educated. She incorporated her scientific understanding of human development with her passion for mathematics, physics, natural sciences, anthropology, psychology and philosophy.

Through years of observation and scientific study, she created a system that looked at the development of the entire child. She believed that all children possess an intellectual and creative potential, an internal desire to learn and the ability to direct themselves in this learning.

I have studied the child, I have taken what the child has given me, and expressed it, and that is what is called the Montessori Method.—Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori died in Noodwijk, Holland, in 1952, but her work continues.
